Gen Z i front: A turning point for Nepal

Nepal is experiencing a quiet but powerful shift led by its younger generation. I believe the country is standing at the edge of a generational shift, and Gen Z is the force pushing Nepal to rethink its future. My name is Kripa Ale, and I am from Nepal.

As someone from Nepal who sees young people constantly discussing politics online, I think social media has become one of the most powerful tools for Gen Z in Nepal. I think it all started as social media played a vital role in it. In my opinion, many young Nepalese are frustrated with traditional politics because the same leaders have been in power for years without solving major problems like unemployment and corruption.

Yes, corruption is the main reason Gen Z became frustrated and started a revolution against it, because when the same issues continue repeatedly for years without any change, it is very natural for a new generation to question the system and demand something better. Because of corruption and political instability, general people are facing many problems.

Every family needs a stable income to support their household, but due to a lack of job opportunities, the young generation is forced to leave their families and the country to search for better opportunities for their future. Many married men leave their wives and children alone in their home country and seek job opportunities abroad just to provide basic needs for them. Unemployment is one of the serious problems in Nepal, all caused by corruption.

From online frustration to nationwide protests

Some people argue that Gen Z activism is limited to social media. While that can sometimes be true, I believe online discussions are still important because they spread awareness and encourage people to question authority. Ultimately, I believe Gen Z has the potential to transform Nepal’s future.

On September 8, 2025, thousands of young people in Nepal, mostly Gen Z students, protested in Kathmandu against corruption and the government’s ban on social media platforms. The protest began peacefully but turned violent after clashes with police near the parliament building, where security forces used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and reportedly live ammunition, causing many deaths and injuries. On September 9, anger spread across the country after news of the killings. More protests and riots broke out, several government buildings were set on fire, and Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned amid the crisis.

New leadership and hopes for the future

If young people continue demanding transparency, accountability, and innovation, they can push the country toward real progress. Because of the Gen Z movement in Nepal, the country moved toward new elections in hopes of bringing fresh leadership into government — leadership that is trustworthy, educated, and forward‑thinking, and that can address the problems affecting the country. As a result of the movement, a new election process began to select a new prime minister, and young people can finally see how youths’ voices are being heard by raising their voices against injustice.

Now in Nepal, everyone voted against the old prime minister who had to resign due to the Gen Z movement, and many voters cast their vote for the new prime minister, who is young and educated, because every youth wants to do something in their own country. Nepal is transforming because now we have a new prime minister, Balendra Shah, who is young and educated. He has already started his work on transparency and accountability in Nepal’s financial system.

Many people have lost their lives due to the movement in Nepal, and as a Gen Z myself, I am very glad to see that positive change is finally happening — slowly, and of course with the help of the movement, because young people chose to raise their voices and say that enough is enough. In the future, I would really like to see a new Nepal with better visions, job opportunities, honest leadership, and a brighter future where every family has basic needs like food, clothes, shelter, education, and healthcare.
